Outlast, Just A Cheap Jump Scare Game Or A Great Horror Game
For many of you gamers out there, if you haven’t played Outlast just go out and buy it or download it, IT is such a refreshing horror game after the resident evil just dropped the ball and just focus on confusing action (not a fan of resident evil 4 and up). In Outlast you play Miles Upshur, a reporter drawn by an anonymous tip to come to Mount Massive to investigate allegations that an unscrupulous corporation is doing horrible things to mental patients in the pursuit of profits. For some of you that never heard of Outlast, Just watch this let’s play by PewdiPew and angryjoe
The first person view on Outlast really drawns you in, as you move through Mount Massive in first person, you can feel your weighty movements make you feel physically grounded in the environment. And hoo boy what an environment it is, Mount Massive is supposed to be a place with a long, dark history, and as you make your way through it, you come to believe that it has been home to many many horrors over the decades. You can almost feel the damp, moldy air infesting your lungs, and every shadowy room fills you with apprehension, since you never know when someone might be waiting to leap out at you.
Besides the creepy environment, jump scares is the bread and butter of this game but for me personally more often than not they feel cheap, for instance you just walking and then BOOO! …some maniac just pop its head and all of a sudden the music and visual just focus in on the maniac face, and i don’t think the face is all that scary.
Its just feels cheap jump scare for me, and when you encounter the hulking brute and the other homicidal denizens of Mount Massive that are trying to kill you, and you can’t defend yourself against them and die. Then you have to face the same situation a second or third or fourth time, the tension dissipates, as if you’re watching a scene in a horror movie you’ve seen before and you know exactly when the killer is going to strike. That is just one of the weakness of outlast when you need to repeat scenarios, the gameplay takes on a rote feeling of trial and error; you know that what you did last time didn’t work, so you try something else, until you find an approach that does work.
That’s why I think Outlast is just a cheap jump scare game, its effective but sometimes its just feels cheap. what about you? what do you think about outlast?
